Biggest Breakthrough Artists for 2018

There are very few, if any, musical artists, groups and bands who do not dream of hitting the big time and of becoming a global sensation. Some are in the industry for the money, some for the fame, but all want to showcase their talents and their music on the biggest stage. The music industry today is a different beast to the one that existed only 10 years ago. Sales of physical copies of CDs and record are on the decline while digital downloads are dominant. Some music artists do not even bother trying to sign with a record label and instead use social media to promote themselves, their brand and their sound. Scour the internet and you will find hundreds and thousands of budding musician who want to become an established player in the industry. Some of these artists are on the cusp of breaking through into the big time and becoming a respected industry leader like say Amazon or PokerstarsCasino are today. It takes time to become established, yet these artists look set to have a massive breakthrough in 2018.

Dua Lipa: The most nominated female artist in British musical history

Dua Lipa is one such music artist. The 22 year old from London began her musical career at the tender age of 14 when she began covering songs by other artists on her YouTube channel. Dua sang Dua Lipasongs by her favourites artists such as P!nk and Nelly Furtado before signing with Warner Music Group in 2015. Her debut album spawned several singles that had a good level of success, particularly in Europe where her second single “Be the One” reached number one in Belgium, Poland and Slovakia in addition to charting in the top 10 in 11 European territories. In February 2016, Lipa released “Hotter than Hell which reached 15th in the UK charts and a few months later in August her single “Blow Your Mind (Mwah)” became the singer’s first entry on the US Billboard Hot 100. Lipa had her first number one in June 2017 with the single “New Rules” and she became the first female solo artists since “Hello” by Adele to top the UK charts and that was in 2015. While she has enjoyed success, it was the 2018 Brit Awards that propelled Lipa into the global limelight. Lipa received five nominations for British Female Solo Artist, British Breakthrough Act, MasterCard British Album of the Year, British Single of the Year and British Video of the Year; this was the first time a female artist had received five nominations. Lipa won the award for Best British Female Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act. Look out for Lipa because she is going to be bigger and more popular in the coming months.

His voice has been in video games, when will global success come

Jacob BanksAnother music artist who could breakthrough during 2018 is Jacob Banks, a 26 year old who became the first-ever unsigned act to appear on the popular BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge, which is quite an honour because the show usually only showcases major acts. Banks was born in Nigeria and now resides in Birmingham, United Kingdom. Back in 2012, Banks won a MOBO (Music Of Black Origin) UnSung regional competition and four years later he signed with Interscope Records. Banks’ unique sound features R&B, hip-hop and soul influences and it is only a matter of time before he gets the breakthrough that he deserves. Banks has already seen some of his songs and music feature in the mainstream, although chart success has not happened yet. The song “Move With You” features on the EA Sports game FIFA 15 while “Unholy War” features in the season finale of the TV series The Blacklist: Redemption, in an episode of TV series Lucifer and on the reveal trailer for the 2017 Need for Speed Payback video game. It is only a matter of time before the world sits up and makes Banks super successful.

Another musical artist you may not be aware of is the 26 year old Canadian Jessie Reyez. Born in Toronto to Colombian parents, Reyez first made waves in the music industry in 2017 when her single “Figures” reached 58 in the Canadian Hot 100, although many of her fans prefer the visceral, haunting song “Gatekeeper” that called out the music and entertainment industry for sexism, something Reyes experiences when she was a young, aspiring artist. Reyez was nominated for two awards at the 2017 iHeartRadio Much Music Video Awards and a year later was nominated for the Breakthrough Artist of the Year at the Juno Awards of 2018.

Sometimes all you need to succeed in the music industry is a lot of talent, be prepared to put in the hard work and then if a little luck shines down on you, you can hit the big time. Look out for these talented artists during 2018.
